Infinity War and Solo Are Most Expensive Movies in History?

It’s no secret now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars movies have become Disney’s most profitable products, and they are certainly spending a lot to put these movies out. As it turns out, their next two releases may end up becoming history’s most expensive movies.

The last three Star Wars films all broke the $1 billion mark at the global box office, and the latest installment to the MCU Black Panther has become the third highest grossing film in the United States. Due to the wild success of these franchises, it is clear that Disney is sparing no expense to put more movies out, in order to put even more cash in their pockets.

The last time Disney was so ambitious with spending money on their franchises was with Pirates of the Caribbean. In fact, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides currently holds the record for most expensive movie of all time, with an estimated budget of $378 million. However, this record might soon change.

Due to the massive cast and wide use of CGI in this month’s Avengers: Infinity War, there is no denying that Disney has put a lot of dough into this particular project. A couple years ago, rumors surfaced that Disney and Marvel Studios were spending a total of $1 billion that would be split between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. This would’ve meant that each movie had a budget of $500 million. However, this rumor was soon shot down by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

While Marvel has yet to reveal the actual budget of Avengers: Infinity War, there have been a lot of rumors, placing the project’s budget just under the $400 million mark, which is double the budget of most MCU movies. Since there is no official confirmation yet on any of the numbers, all of these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. If these rumors are to be believed, though, it’s quite possible that Avengers: Infinity War could dethrone Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as the most expensive movie of all time.

This could all change again in May, however, with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story. The final budget of Solo remains a mystery as well, but the spin-off movie may also have cost Disney and Lucasfilm around $400 million.

The budgets given to Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were around $200 million, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens being a bit higher at a $245 million budget. While it is safe to assume that the initial budget for Solo: A Star Wars Story was around $200 million, the fact that a majority of the movie was reshot may have skyrocketed the budget.

After directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord were fired from the project, Ron Howard was brought on as a replacement. According to a report from The Resistance Broadcast, Howard reshot almost the entirety of the movie for “twice the budget.” If this report is true, and we assume that Solo did have an initial budget of $200 million, then Solo: A Star Wars Story could also become a contender to be the most expensive movie of all time.

There is no officially released budget for either Avengers: Infinity War or Solo: A Star Wars Story, only rumors and speculation courtesy of SWNN and The Resistance Broadcast. While it is possible that neither of them may actually take the rank of most expensive movie of all time, it is a safe bet that the final budget of both projects will be remarkably high. Disney has high hopes for both projects, so it would only make sense that they would be willing to put so much dough into both movies.
